It’s very easy to blame most of today’s distracted driving on the obsession that young people have with their phones. While teenagers who text while driving are a problem, they aren’t the only ones to blame.
Business executives try to coordinate meetings and get things done on their daily commute. Parents are always multi-tasking, even behind the wheel. They may be trying to soothe a baby by reaching behind the driver’s seat and rubbing a knee. Or they may be trying to break up an argument between two siblings. Many are even eating and distributing snacks and drinks while on the road.
All of these are examples of distracted driving, because anything that takes a driver’s focus off the road can end in a serious crash. Here at DiBella Law Injury and Accident Lawyers, we understand just how great that danger is: we see too many people hurt in accidents caused by distracted driving in Massachusetts.
This was the thinking behind our Don’t Look Down Giveaway. With this safe driving initiative, we’re giving away free magnetic phone mounts to anyone who shares a safe driving tip!
The Dangers of Distracted Driving
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a driver who takes his eyes off the road for longer than two seconds will double his risk of being in a car crash. Holding and using a smartphone can quadruple that risk.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is doing its own research on distracted driving. According to this federal agency, eight people are killed and 1,161 people are injured every day in accidents related to distracted driving.
These statistics may not be surprising, given that the NHTSA also estimates that 660,000 people manipulate smartphones and electronic devices every day while driving. And that number has held steady since 2010.
